Theodore Bloomfield

Theodore Bloomfield ( born June 14, 1923 in Cleveland, † April 1, 1998 in Warrenton, Oregon ) was an American conductor and composer.

Bloomfield studied at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and with Pierre Monteux at the Juilliard School. In 1945 he made ​​his debut with the New York Little Symphony Orchestra. On 11 May 1946, he led a chamber orchestra of the Juilliard School at the premiere of the 1906 resulting piece The Unanswered Question by Charles Ives.

1946 to 1952 he worked in Cleveland. He then managed various American Symphony Orchestra: From 1955 to 1959, the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Portland, Oregon, and from 1959 to 1963, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in Rochester, New York.

1964 to 1966 he worked at the Hamburg State Opera. 1966 Bloomfield was the successor of Lovro von Matačić music director of the Frankfurt Opera, but already retired in October 1967 after a conflict with the orchestra again.

From 1975 to 1982 he headed the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.

1976 Bloomfield was awarded the German Critics Prize.

Since 1990 he lived in retirement in Warrenton on the Oregon coast, where he died on 1 April 1998 of a heart attack. Bloomfield's estate is held in the Portland State University.
