Theodore Edgar McCarrick

Theodore Edgar McCarrick, Cardinal (* July 7, 1930 in New York City, USA) is archbishop emeritus of Washington.

Life

Theodore Edgar McCarrick studied the subjects of Catholic theology, philosophy and sociology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and received on 21 May 1958 under Francis Cardinal Spellman, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Subsequently, he worked eleven years at the Catholic universities in Washington and Puerto Rico as a teacher, counselor and administrative employee. 1969 appointed him Archbishop of New York, Terence Cardinal Cooke, his personal secretary.

On May 24, 1977 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Rusibisir and auxiliary bishop in New York. He received his episcopal consecration Terence Cardinal Cooke on June 29th of the same year. 1981 Pope John Paul II appointed him as the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Metuchen, which he ran for five years, and gave him in 1986 the management of the Archdiocese of Newark.

In November 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Washington and took him on 21 February 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Nereo e Achilleo in the College of Cardinals to.

He participated in the conclave of 2005, in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. This took on 16 March 2006 McCarricks in 2005 on reaching the 75th year of life for reasons of age pre- mounted resignation. McCarrick took no part in the conclave in 2013, as he had at that time lost by the 80th year of life, the right to vote.

He is a member of the Pontifical Foundation Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice ( CAPP ).
