Theodoric I, Duke of Upper Lorraine

Dietrich I ( * 965, † between April 11, 1026 and 2 January 1027) was Count of Bar and duke of Upper Lorraine. He was the son of Frederick I of Bar and Upper Lorraine and Beatrix, sister of Hugh Capet.

He succeeded his father 978 under the regency of his mother, which lasted until 987. 985 he stood in common with other barons of Lorraine, including his cousin Gottfried the prisoner, Count of Verdun, against the French king Lothar, when he besieged Verdun, where he got himself in captivity.

He was a loyal follower of the Ottonian emperors. 1011 he fought for Henry II against his relatives from the county of Luxembourg. 1018 he fell in Burgundy captured again, wherever he at the end but managed to beat the invaders Odo II of Blois, Count of Meaux and Troyes. 1019 he took his son Frederick II in the government of the duchy. 1024, after the death of Emperor Henry II, he opposed his successor Conrad II, but then switched sides and thus recognized the new ruler. 1026 died his son Frederick II, so that the duchy with Dietrich's death directly to his grandson Frederick III. passed.

He married around 985 Richilde, probably a daughter of Folmar I, Count of Luneville and Metz; their children were:

  • Adele († 995 ), ∞ Walram I. Count of Arlon
  • Frederick II ( * 995, † 1026), count of Bar and duke of Upper Lorraine
