Theodoric II, Duke of Lorraine

Dietrich II ( * before 1065, † December 30, 1115 ) out of the house was Châtenois since 1070 Duke of Upper Lorraine, Count of Elsassgau and Vogt Remiremont. He was the eldest son of the Duke of Upper Lorraine Gerhard and Hedwig of Namur.

Life

Dietrich's brother Gerhard also claimed the title of duke. The disputes between the brothers ended in 1073 by a peace treaty, in which Gerhard already has the title of Count of Vaudémont.

Dietrich stood on the side of King Henry IV, for whom he fought against the Saxons, especially in 1075 at the Battle of Homburg at the Unstrut.

In 1078 he captured the fortress of Metz, together with Henry, whose bishop Hermann had placed himself on the side of Pope Gregory VII. In the aftermath Dietrich attacked several times in matters of the exiled bishop who excommunicated him then what the Pope then confirmed early 1079. When the bishop returned to Metz in 1082, Dietrich could not prevent this; until two years later, in 1084, Henry IV succeeded even re- submission of the city, but it was not permanent.

He married his first wife Hedwig of Formbach, daughter of Friedrich von shape brook and the Gertrud von Haldensleben, probably widow of Count Henry, widow of Gebhard von Süpplingenburg († 1075 in the Battle of Homburg at the Unstrut ), Count of Harzgau.

Children of Dietrich and Hedwig were:

  • Gertrude, † May 23, 1144; ∞ Florens II the thickness Count of Holland, † March 2, 1122

His second wife, he married Gertrude of Flanders, a daughter of Count Robert the Frisian.
