Theodorus Schrevelius

Schrevelius Theodorus ( Dirk Schrevel ) (* July 25 1572 in Haarlem / Netherlands, † December 3, 1649 in Leiden / The Netherlands) was a humanist, writer and poet.

Life

Theodorus Schrevelus had studied at the University of Leiden philology since January 28, 1591 and worked from 1600 to 1624 as head teacher in Haarlem. 1607-1618 he was in the City Council. Towards the end of this time broke as a result of the decisions of the Synod of Dort from the dispute over the doctrine of predestination among the Reformed. Theodorus took the party of " Arminianism " or " Arminian " one who had represented at the Synod a milder view of this doctrine, and therefore both of the Synod, as well as from public office were excluded altogether. So had also divorced the rector from his office.

Theodorus turned to the suffering and found his living as a private tutor. 1625 but appealed to him as rector at the Leiden Latin School, at which he could act to 1641.

Very well known was his chronicle " HARLEMIAS ", the first Dutch edition appeared in 1648. In addition to this work, many other books have been written in Dutch and in Latin by him.
