Theodrada

Theodrada ( probably 785 *, † January 9 844/853 in the Abbey Muensterschwarzach in Schwarzach am Main ) was a daughter of Charlemagne and abbess at Argenteuil and Muensterschwarzach.

She was born as the elder of the two daughters of Charles's fourth wife Fastrada and as the twelfth child of the Frankish king.

From 814 it is busy as abbess of Notre- Dame d' Argenteuil. It is unclear whether it has already been introduced during the lifetime of her father and at his instigation, in their office or but was forced after the seizure of power by her step- brother Louis the Pious to enter a convent. A document, which probably dates from the year 828, but includes the statement that Theodrada Argenteuil had received from her father. In any case, the Abbey on the occasion of the transfer of the Abbey of Saint- Denis independently and as a Carolingian monastery house was directly subordinate to the Frankish king. In the aforementioned deed of 828 but Theodrada refunded the monastery at St. Denis back on the condition that she could use it for life, unless they voluntarily renounce it, or will be compensated with another monastery.

Charlemagne is said to the living in the 12th century Hugh of Amiens ( Archbishop of Rouen ), according to his daughter and her Convent of the Holy skirt, have reportedly handed over a woven garment of Maria of Jesus as a relic. However, this tradition can also be a legend that the relic should give additional importance by making them brought Charlemagne in conjunction, and is therefore the basis of their temporal distance to the event no indication of the date of the inauguration Theodradas. The fabric, which dates from the first or second century AD, Argenteuil made from the 15th century into a popular place of pilgrimage.

As Normans the area around Paris, in which was the monastery devastated, Theodrada fled to the East Frankish Empire and became abbess of the convent Muensterschwarzach. In the following years she tied there since the monastic reform of Benedict Anianes provided free choice of head inside by the nuns. To protect the abbey, she seized it with the all the land to the bishops of Würzburg. Yet she herself maintains certain rights to the monastery, because in a deed dated 9 January 844 determines ( with the consent of the Bishop of Würzburg Gozbald ) Blutenda, the daughter of a deceased Earl called Folk Bert, as her successor.

The date of death Theodradas is just as bad handed as the history of women's Cathedral in the following years: On July 21, 853 Hildegard was, daughter of Louis the German and grandniece Theodradas, abbess of the convent Dame Cathedral in Zurich, after they had previously occupied this office in Muensterschwarzach. So Theodrada likely to have died some time before this date, as in the period between 844 ( their last documentary mention as a living person) and 853, the term of office of Hildegard must lie. In the years before Blutenda had died or the document from the year 844 have been undone, because a deed of 27 March 857 points out that Theodrada had assured the lifelong right to use Muensterschwarzach for the time after her death, Hildegard, while Blutenda is completely ignored here. Since Theodrada is definitely referred to in this document as having died, 857 terminus ante quem is the absolute for their year of death.
