Theognis of Megara

Theognis of Megara ( Greek ὀ Θέογνις Μεγαρεύς, after dating the Suda second half of the 6th century BC) is a Greek writer under whose name a collection of poems is preserved in the elegiac meter. The " Corpus Theognideum " includes in the oldest manuscript in 1431 verses, which are divided into two books. In science it is considered mostly assume that the corpus actually contains works by various poets.

Life

The ancient chronology dated the heyday of Theognis in the middle of the 6th century. A dating based on the poems is problematic due to the unclear authenticity: v. 757-768 probably relate to the Xerxeszug 480/479 BC; v. 894, however, speaks of the dynasty of the Kypseliden in Corinth, and therefore must be created between about 627 BC and 585.

Theognis describes himself as a citizen of Megara ( v. 19-26 ), although in ancient times it was disputed whether the city was meant on the isthmus or the colony of Megara Hyblaia in Sicily. While Plato was of the latter opinion, is what this research mainly a source of Theognis from the Greek mainland.

Address the content partly as saying seals formulated verses

  • Toasts for symposia
  • Noble rules of life for a young, Kyrnos called friend
  • Actions of the poet on the social changes - the creation of a moneyed aristocracy, tyranny - in the polis world of 6 / 5 Century BC from conservative- aristocratic view
  • General reflections on friendship, happiness and spirit of the people.

In the second book, which is only passed down through a manuscript, especially verses pederastic contents are summarized.

It is clear that the life, creation and reception background of the seals were noble (political ) communities ( Hetaeriae ).

Because of their Sentenzenhaftigkeit Proverbs was probably copied early weitertradiert, used for teaching and thereby also changing.
