Thermomechanical analysis

The term Thermomechanical analysis is the generic term for the measurement of dimensional changes and deformations of a sample which is subjected to a temperature program. This is a method of thermal analysis.

In the TMA in the strict sense of the word, the deformation is measured under mechanical stress. In the dilatometric mode dimension changes are recognized as possible without loading the sample. Depending on the operating mode allows the determination of TMA:

  • Thermal effects ( softening, change of the expansion coefficient, swelling in solvents, shrinkage )
  • Temperatures which characterize the thermal effect,
  • Deformation step heights ( degree of deformation),
  • Coefficients of expansion.

In the Dynamic load TMA ( DLTMA ) mode can be measured with a favorable specimen shape, the elastic modulus.
