Theron of Acragas

Theron of Agrigentum (c. 540/530 BC, † 473/472 BC) was a tyrant in ancient Sicily. He came from the family of the Emmeniden, the exact date (usually to 488 BC dated) and the nature of his seizure of power in Akragas (modern Agrigento ) is unclear. Important chronological benchmark is the conquest of Himera 483 BC and attending the Carthaginians fighting with subsequent victory along with his son Gelon of Syracuse in 480 BC; by the rich spoils of victory Akragas could ascend to a prosperous city ( which was then glorified in the Pindarscholien ). 476 BC, he was also Olympic champion of the 76th Olympic Games of Antiquity in Tethrippon ..

Theron seems to have been a mild tyrant, even if it is perhaps illustrated in the Pindarscholien as too well. Because it is not his lack of hard coatings such as the severe punishment against the Himeraer shows after they had rebelled against him.

Despite the conflict with Hiero 477 Theron reconciled again soon with this, so that you can discover a trend in Theron, to shy away from the fight against a powerful enemy, so you can from a certain " reason of state " go out with him. His son had this Thrasydaios not feel well and had soon after Theron's death 472, after he had become the successor, flee.
