A thesis or graduate work in Germany and Austria, the thesis requirement of a diploma program at a university or vocational college. In Austria, the term also refers to a project work which can be performed as an alternative to professional exam at a higher vocational school. The thesis is written performance component of a diploma examination and, together with other services such as written examinations ( examinations ) and / or oral examinations and defense of universities to obtain the academic diploma degree (Diploma or Diploma (FH) ) and at vocational colleges for obtaining the diploma as state-recognized degree.

If this scope would be significantly exceeded in experimental subjects or extensive measurements, the detailed laboratory or measurement protocols can be stored as an attachment in a single copy at the supervising institution.

With the expiry of the diploma courses as part of the Bologna process occur at many universities in the medium term the Bachelor and the Master's thesis in place of the thesis.
