Thessaloniki Metro

The Metro Thessaloniki (Greek Μετρό Θεσσαλονίκης ) is a under construction underground in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. Construction began in late 2006 The opening will take place in December 2016.; Test rides are scheduled from November 2015.

History

In the 1980s, the city began its own initiative, the planning of a subway, in 1986, work began, but these were canceled in 1989 due to financing difficulties. 1992 began a new configuration by the Ministry of Construction. The experience already gained in the construction of the metro line 2 and 3 of Athens showed, that would be uneconomical completion of the work of the city preparatory work, and they decided on a new building. The old shell is mocked by critics since then as Kouvelas - hole (after the name of the then mayor ). To date, pumps are in operation, the dry hold this underground building from water penetration, various development plans failed.

The planning began in 2003, the calls were made until August 2005. In April 2006, the construction contracts were awarded in late 2006 and construction began. They settled in the new building for the driverless system AnsaldoBreda, which already in the similarly structured system of the Copenhagen Metro ( opened in 2002 ) has proven useful.
