Thiais

Thiais is a commune with 29 229 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Val -de- Marne in the Île- de -France region; it belongs to Arrondissement L' Haÿ -les -Roses and Canton Thiais.

Geography

The municipality is located 7 km south-southeast of Paris.

Districts of Thiais (except the center ): Les Grands champs, Grignon, Perruchet and Moulin Vert.

Neighboring communities of Thiais are:

Vitry -sur -Seine in the north, Choisy- le- Roi in the east, Rungis and Chevilly -Larue in the West and Orly Paray -Vieille -Poste in the south.

History

In the German -French war a failure by the trapped troops in Paris was attempted during the Siege of Paris (1870-1871) on September 30, 1870. In the battle of Chevilly, which was conducted in the field of Thiais, the French units were stopped and beaten back. The communities Chevilly and Thiais were largely destroyed in these battles.

Traffic

Thiais is at the train station Gare du Pont de Rungis - Aéroport d' Orly connected via the high-speed railway line RER C to the public transport network of the Greater Paris. The Autoroute A86, a ring road around Paris, runs through the territory of the municipality. It is also near the Autoroute A6 begins ( Autoroute du Soleil ) in the south of France or the A6b leads into the center of the capital. In the field of the neighboring community Orly is the airport Paris -Orly.

Attractions

  • The church of Saint -Leu Saint- Gilles was built in the 12th century, is a monument historique.

Twinning

Einbeck in Lower Saxony ( Germany ) since 1962 twinned Thiais. The Chief Administrative Officer of the district Einbeck Walter Schaefer was named an honorary citizen of Thiais for his services to the German -French relations.
