Thiazolidine is an organic liquid. Due to its structure, it can be used as (N / S) - are considered acetal. As an isolated substance has no significant industrial importance, however, finds the thiazolidine basic structure in many natural products and pharmaceutical agents again.

Properties

The thiazolidine skeleton is a five-membered ring in the chemical with a sulfur and a nitrogen atom in the 1 - or 3- position. A series of thiazolidine derivatives are of great importance in medical applications. Popular are Thiazolidines as a partial structure of penicillins. But in other drugs such as rosiglitazone and pioglitazone, both of which are used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type II, you can find them again.

Production

Thiazolidines can be synthesized by reaction with aldehydes or ketones with elimination of water from organic 1-amino -2- mercaptans. Addition reactions to the C = N double bond of 3- thiazo (see Asinger reaction ) also provide Thiazolidines.
