The channelized Zihl at Yverdon

The Zihl (Fr. La Thielle ) is a tributary of the River Aare.

It arises from the confluence of the Orbe and the talent northeast of the town of Orbe in the canton of Vaud, is included as a channelized river to the north- east by the intensively managed Orbeebene (French Plaine de l' Orbe ) and ends already after 9 km at Yverdon- les- Bains in Lake Neuchatel.

The other parts of the Zihl were the connection between Neuchâtel and Biel (mean Zihl ) and the natural outflow from Lake Biel in the Aare (lower Zihl ). These two flow components were largely replaced the occasion of the Jura waters correction by canals. From the middle Zihl is left of Zihl Canal, a loop of the river - preserved - La Vieille Thielle. From the lower Zihl there is still the first, about 2 km long section between Lake Biel and the confluence with the Nidau- Buren - channel. The remaining 7 km stretch of river to the confluence with the Aare has replaced the Nidau- Buren - channel.

Begun in the 17th century, a navigable link between the Rhone and the Rhine from Lake Geneva from via Venoge, Canal Entreroches, Zihl and Aare Aare- up to the mouth of the Rhine at Koblenz could not be completed. The beginning of this century until all water and road construction in Switzerland held open opportunity to create these Transhelvetischen channel once, has now been officially abandoned.
