Thierry Sabine

Thierry Sabine ( born June 13, 1949 in Neuilly -sur -Seine, † January 14, 1986 in Mali) was a French motorcycle racer and founder of the Dakar Rally. The idea for the rally came to him in 1977 during the Abidijan -Nice rally. He had been missing for several days in the desert. On December 26, 1978, he launched the first Paris-Dakar Rally, whose organization took over Sabine. In addition, he was also involved socially in the countries through which led the rally. So he founded eg in Dakar hospital.

On 14 January 1986 he met with Daniel Balavoine, journalist Nathaly Odent of, the pilot François Xavier Bagnoud - and the radio technician Jean -Paul Le Fur during the rally in a helicopter flight killed. The helicopter crashed on a dune in Mali near the Lake Gossi. At the crash site, a memorial plaque was placed.
