Thiophosgene is an orange-red to red foul-smelling fluid. It is the sulfur analogue of ( thio ) phosgene and can become analogous reactions, such as the introduction of a thiocarbonyl group, are used. Thiophosgene reacts violently with some nucleophilic solvents such as water and alcohols. Since you want to avoid working with gaseous phosgene its high toxicity due, where possible, the use of liquid thiophosgene for reasons of easier handling and lower equipment expenditure offers often.

Production

Can be synthesized as a catalyst in xylene at 140 ° C of thiophosgene from trichloromethanesulfenyl chloride and iron ( III) chloride.

The reaction may also be carried out in benzene or toluene with zinc chloride or aluminum chloride as a catalyst.
