Third Treaty of San Ildefonso

The Third Treaty of San Ildefonso (Spanish Title: Tratado entre España y la República francesa para la cesión del ducado de Parma y retrocesion de la Luisiana ) was a negotiated quietly treaty between France and Spain in which Spain, the colony of Louisiana to France returned. The contract was signed by Louis Alexandre Berthier, representative of France, and Don Mariano Luis de Urquijo, representative of Spain, negotiated and signed on October 1, 1800. The treaty was the result of the predicament in which Spain found itself by Napoleon. The terms and conditions do not prescribe the exact boundaries of the territory in return, which later became a point of contention between Spain and the United States after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, when France sold the territory to the United States. This agreement confirmed the already earlier treaty of alliance, signed at San Ildefonso on August 18, 1796, see Treaty of San Ildefonso.
