Thirteenth Step is the second studio album by American progressive rock band A Perfect Circle.

The album was released on 16 September 2003, three years after the release of their first studio album, Mer de Noms. As singles the songs Weak and Powerless, The Outsider and Blue published.

Background

It is believed that the album's title is an allusion to the twelve-step program, an abstinence - supporting program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Maynard James Keenan says in a commentary for the DVD aMOTION that Thirteenth Step is a concept album where all the tracks deal with the problem of addiction. Also the following album Emotive 2004 is a concept album; in this case, the work involved in the anti - war movement.

At the time of the show Troy Van Leeuwen and Paz Lenchantin had left the band. Bassist Jeordie White, who was previously known for Marilyn Manson under the name Twiggy Ramirez, and guitarist James Iha, who had previously played with the Smashing Pumpkins, Van Leeuwen and replaced Lenchantin. Iha but not participated in the development of Thirteenth Step.

The album was chosen by readers of music magazine Visions at number 26 of the " 150 plates for eternity ."
