Thirty Meter Telescope

The Thirty Meter Telescope ( TMT) is a reflecting telescope with a mirror diameter of 30 meters, the construction of which is planned by a collaboration of Caltech with Canadian universities. The primary mirror is to be made of 492 segments with a diameter of 1.4 meters. The telescope is designed for observation in the wavelength range from 0.31 to 28 micrometers. It will be equipped with an adaptive optics system, and achieve a ten-fold higher resolution than the Hubble Space Telescope at wavelengths longer than 0.8 microns with it. As a site of Mauna Kea in Hawaii is provided. Current plans anticipate construction to begin in April 2014, the scientific operation should then start in 2022.
