This What is the first studio album by British progressive rock band Jethro Tull. It was taken in Chelsea, London in 1968 in Sound Techniques Studio and published in the same year in the UK. It reached # 10 in the UK charts and number 62 on the Billboard 200 In contrast to the later albums, the pieces do not come exclusively from the singer and band leader Ian Anderson. The guitarist Mick Abrahams had on the writing of the pieces have a significant share. However, he left the band after this album and was replaced by Martin Barre.

Style

Stylistically This Was is very uneven. They range from blues with acoustic instruments ( Some Day the Sun Will not Shine for You) on the cover of a jazz song of Roland Kirk ( Serenade to a Cuckoo ) with the typical Ian Anderson flute playing through to Progressive Rock (My Sunday feeling and Beggar 's Farm ), in which the later Jethro Tull resonate. On the play Move on Alone is heard as a singer Mick Abrahams Ian Anderson instead.
