Thohoyandou

Province

Thohoyandou is a South African town in the Limpopo province. It is located in the municipality in the district of Vhembe Thulamela, whose main town is Thohoyandou. The city was the capital until 1994, recognized only by the former South African apartheid government state Venda. The name comes from the Tshivenda, called " elephant's head " and is the name of a former Venda chief. The elephant is the emblem of the clan of former President of Venda, Patrick Mphephu.

Geography

2011 Thohoyandou had 69 453 inhabitants, most of whom are Venda. The city is the administrative center in the north- east of South Africa. In the vicinity of Thohoyandou are the former townships Folovhodwe, Muledane, Shayandima, Makwarela and Maniini. The climate is subtropical.

History

Thohoyandou is a young city's founding. From 1971 to 1994, Thohoyandou capital of Venda, which was in 1979 became formally independent. The town's development was funded by the South African government in the wake of the former homeland policy.

Economy and Transport

Around Thohoyandou more fruit, tea, tobacco and maize are due to the subtropical climate and the fertile soil bananas grown. The city is the commercial center for the surrounding region. In the nearby lake Nandoni Dam fisheries are conducted.

Thohoyandou is situated on the R524 regional road that leads west to east direction from Louis Trichardt on Thohoyandou in the Kruger National Park. To the west of Thohoyandou Thohoyandou is the Airport ( IATA designation THY).

The University of Venda (short Univention ) is based in Thohoyandou. It was founded in 1982.

Sports

The football club Black Leopards F. C. from Thohoyandou played until 2007/ 08 on the top South African League, Premier Division; Since then the club compete in the First Division. The stadium has a capacity of 40,000 people.
