Thoman Burgkmair

Thoman (Thomas) Burgkmair (* around 1444 in Augsburg, † 1523 ) was a painter of the late Middle Ages in Augsburg. He was listed as a painter there in the guild books of Augsburg Painters Guild. He is the father of Hans Burgkmair the Elder.

Thoman Burgkmair are a few images associated with the output of the Gothic and early Renaissance, some of which are often cited as a source for understanding this period in Augsburg or beyond.

Importance for the Augsburger painting and its painters' guild

After marriage in 1469 to the daughter of an Augsburg sculptor will Thoman Burgkmair member of the guild of the Augsburg painter, who were also connected the carvers, glaziers and gold bat. He was probably the first Augsburg Painters book " beautiful writing " and that holds the names of around 1470 artists living in the city. The book is now in the Town Archives Augsburg.

Thomas Burgkmair is counted by some art historians together with the master of ILSUNG Madonna and the Master of 1477 the most important and influential painters of the Augsburg late Gothic period. Although other in comparison to his son Hans in Thomas Burgkmair even recognize only one " average artist " yet his influence and his respected role in the Augsburg painters' guild is generally recognized.

Father of Hans Burgkmair

Thoman Burgkmair is the father of Hans Burgkmair the Elder ( * 1473 ), which in Augsburg has also worked as a painter, draftsman and wood engraver at the beginning of the 16th century and is known as the most important Augsburg artist between late Gothic and Renaissance. Probably Hans was first with his father in teaching.

Like almost all other artists of his era Thoman Burgkmair has not signed his works. A write-up is difficult and sometimes controversial. Especially his portrait paintings are a visible source for the understanding of his time in Augsburg, or the conditions in the family of Fugger.
