Thomas A. Boyd

Thomas Alexander Boyd (* June 25, 1830 in Bedford, Adams County, Pennsylvania, † May 28, 1897 in Lewistown, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1877 and 1881 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Boyd attended the public schools of his home. In 1848 he graduated from Marshall College in Mercersburg. After a subsequent study of law in Chambersburg and qualifying as a lawyer, he started working in Bedford in this profession. In 1856 he moved his residence and his law firm to Lewistown, Illinois. During the Civil War he served as a captain in an infantry regiment from Illinois, which belonged to the army of the Union. After the war, he hit as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. From 1866 to 1877 he was in the Illinois Senate.

In the congressional elections of 1876 Boyd was in the ninth constituency of his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Richard H. Whiting on March 4, 1877. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1881 two legislative sessions. In 1880 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Thomas Boyd practiced as a lawyer again. He died on 28 May 1897 in Lewistown, where he was also buried.
