Thomas Abernethy

Thomas Gerstle Abernethy ( born May 16, 1903 in Eupora, Webster County, Mississippi, † June 11, 1998 in Jackson, Mississippi ) was an American politician and represented the state of Mississippi in the House of Representatives of the United States.

Career

Thomas Abernethy first attended the public school in Eupora. Then he went first to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and later to the University of Mississippi in Oxford and then graduated in 1924 at the law faculty of Cumberland University in Lebanon. After he had received his license to practice law, he opened a law practice in 1925 in his hometown and practiced there until 1929. Abernethy then moved to Okolona, Mississippi. There he worked from 1936 as district attorney of the third judicial district of Mississippi and held that post until 1942.

Abernethy in 1942 was elected as a Democrat in the 78th U.S. Congress and subsequent to the 14. There he exercised his duties from 3 January 1943 to 3 January 1973. He decided not to run for the 93rd Congress. During his time in the House of Representatives Albernethy was chairman of the Committee on Elections No.. 1 ( 79th Congress ). In addition, he was in 1956 one of the signatories of the Southern Manifesto, a protest letter that was directed against the desegregation ( desegregation ). He was also a delegate to the 1956 and 1960 Democratic National Convention.

Thomas Gerstle Abernethy lived after his first political retreat in Okolona and later in Jackson, where he died on 11 June 1998.
