Thomas Allen (baritone)

Sir Thomas Boaz Allen, CBE ( born September 10, 1944 in Seaham Harbour ) is an English opera singer in the vocal range baritone.

Biography

Thomas Boaz Allen studied from 1964 to 1968 at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1969, he debuted at the Welsh Opera, in 1971 at Covent Garden, which he is to this day. There followed a rapid international career, since 1981, Allen also sings regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In addition to London and New York, he is especially at the Bavarian National Theater in Munich at home. There are also regular appearances at the Salzburg Festival, the Glyndebourne Festival and the Munich Opera Festival.

His repertoire includes over 40 roles in particular the lyric and Gentleman baritone tray. Especially frequently he has sung the title role in Don Giovanni, the Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte by Mozart.

He also appears regularly in recitals on, such as the Wigmore Hall and Snape Maltings in.

Allen is one of the most famous classical singer of Great Britain and strives increasingly addition to his performances at youth development and education. He was knighted for his efforts in 1999. In October 2011, he was the successor to the author Bill Bryson Chancellor ( Chancellor, a largely ceremonial office) elected to the prestigious University of Durham. He took this position in January of 2012.
