Thomas Ashton, 1st Baron Ashton of Hyde

Thomas Gair Ashton, 1st Baron Ashton of Hyde ( born February 5, 1855 in Fallowfield, Manchester, Lancashire, England; † May 1, 1933 in Robertsbridge, Sussex, England ) was a British politician, businessman and peer.

Life and career

Ashton came from a family who were cotton manufacturers for many years. He attended Rugby School and then studied at University College, University of Oxford, before joining the family business. From 1885 to 1886 he was Member of Parliament for the constituency of Hyde in the House of Commons. In 1886 he joined unsuccessfully again for this seat. 1895 to 1911 he represented the constituency in Parliament Luton. He was also justice of the peace of Cheshire and Sussex.

Since 1886, Ashton was married Eva Margaret James. The couple had four children. Ashton was appointed on 28 June 1911 Baron Ashton of Hyde. He died in May 1933 at the age of 78 years.
