Thomas Backus

Thomas Backus (* 1800, † 1858) was an American politician. Between 1849 and 1850 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Connecticut.

Career

The source location on Thomas Backus is very meager. Neither his exact birth and death dates nor the birth and death places have survived. Also about his education and his career beyond politics nothing is known. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party, founded by Andrew Jackson. In the years 1829 and 1833 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Connecticut; In 1835 and 1838 he was elected to the State Senate, respectively.

1849 Backus was elected to the side of Joseph Trumbull to the Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut. This office he held until 1850. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After the end of his term as Lieutenant Governor lose track of him. It is only mentioned in the sources that he died in 1858.
