Thomas Birch Florence

Thomas Birch Florence ( born January 26, 1812 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † July 3, 1875 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1851 and 1861 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Florence Thomas attended the common schools and served an apprenticeship as a Hatter. Since 1833 he worked in this craft. He also went into the newspaper business. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. In the years 1846 and 1848 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress yet.

In the congressional elections of 1850 Florence but was then elected in the first district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Lewis Charles Levin on March 4, 1851. After four elections he could pass in Congress until March 3, 1861 five legislative sessions. These were shaped by the events leading up to the Civil War.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Thomas Florence worked in the newspaper industry in Washington. In the years 1868 and 1874 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died on July 3, 1875 in Washington, and was buried in Philadelphia.
