Thomas Bowles Shannon

Thomas Bowles Shannon ( born September 21, 1827 Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, † February 21, 1897 in San Francisco, California ) was an American politician. Between 1863 and 1865 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Shannon attended the public schools of his home. In 1844 he moved to Illinois and in 1849 during the Gold Rush to California, where he worked in the trade. There he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party. In the years 1859, 1860 and 1862 he was a deputy in the California State Assembly. In the congressional elections of 1862 Shannon was the third election district of his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Frederick Low on March 4, 1865. Since he resigned in 1864 to further candidacy, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1865. This was marked by the events of the Civil War. In Congress, Shannon was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Ministry of Interior.

Between 1865 and 1869 he served as director of the Port Authority of San Francisco. After that he was in the years 1871 and 1872 again a deputy in the State Parliament, California. From 1872 to 1880 Thomas Shannon directed the customs authorities at the port of San Francisco. He then worked again in the trade. He died on 21 February 1897 in San Francisco.
