Thomas Bowman (Iowa politician)

Thomas Bowman ( born May 25, 1848 in Wiscasset, Lincoln County, Maine, † December 1, 1917 in Council Bluffs, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1868 Thomas Bowman moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he was engaged in trade. In the years 1875, 1877 and 1879, he was elected Treasurer of Pottawattamie County. In 1882 he became mayor of Council Bluffs from 1885 to 1889 he was postmaster in this city. Since 1883, he served as the principal owner and editor of the newspaper " Council Bluffs Globe". This newspaper he used as a mouthpiece of his Democratic Party.

1890 Bowman was in the ninth constituency of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on March 4, 1891, the succession of Republican Joseph Rea Reed. Since he resigned in 1892 to run again, Bowman was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1893. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives to Bowman again devoted his private transactions. From 1904 to 1908 he was again postmaster of Council Bluffs. He is also passed on 1 December 1917.
