Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church

The Coats Memorial Church is a Baptist church building in the Scottish town of Paisley in Renfrewshire unitary authority. In 1971 the building was added to the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest monument category A. The church is still in use as such. It was built in commemoration of the textile industrialist and philanthropist Thomas Coats.

Description

The neo-Gothic building is situated on the High Street to the west of the city center and close to the Paisley Museum. It was built in 1894, designed by the Scottish architect Hippolyte Blanc. It consists of a nave with a transept and crossing tower. A wide staircase leads to the entrance on the south side. There occur three gables forth with ornate tympana. Above this is a tracery of three lancet windows flanked by towers with octagonal floor plan and tent roof. Five vertical axes along the nave, on which are arranged the windows. In the clerestory tracery are found from four lancet windows; the aisle twin lancet windows are arranged. The gables of the transept are aligned the front page in their design. The rectangular apse is provided with three lancet windows. The building closes with a slated pitched roof.
