Thomas County (Nebraska)

Thomas County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Thedford, which was probably named after the town in England.

Geography

The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 1848 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Cherry County, Blaine County, Logan County, McPherson County and Hooker County.

History

Thomas County was formed in 1887. It was named after General George H. Thomas.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Thomas County 729 people in 325 households, and 216 families. The population density was 0.4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.5 percent white and 0.3 percent of Native Americans; 0.3 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.8 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 325 households out of which 27 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61 percent were married couples living together, 4 percent were single mothers, 34 percent were non-families, 31 percent of all households and 17 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.84 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread from 23.6 percent population under 18 years, 4.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 20.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 27,292, and the median income for a family was $ 36,618. Males have a median income of $ 25,662, women $ 20,577. The per capita income was $ 15,335. 13.6 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 21.3 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 17.3 percent of seniors aged 65 and over.
