Thomas Darden

Thomas Francis Darden Jr. ( born September 8, 1900 in New York City; † June 17, 1961 ) was an American naval officer. Between 1949 and 1951 he was military governor of American Samoa.

Career

Thomas Darden was his life as an adult officer in the U.S. Navy, where he rose to the Captain. He served on several ships and was during the Second World War at different times staff officer at two admirals. In the meantime, he also commanded the destroyer USS Benham and the Light Pacific-based cruiser USS Denver. He was involved in several battles. He fought for racial integration in the Navy. In the 1940s, he headed a special training program for African Americans to improve their chances of promotion within the Navy.

Between 7 July 1949 and 23 February 1951, he was the successor of Vernon Huber last military governor of American Samoa. All his successors were then civilians.
