Thomas Edward Campbell

Thomas Edward Campbell ( born January 18, 1878 in Prescott, Arizona, † March 1, 1944 in Phoenix, Arizona ) was an American politician ( Republican) and two-time governor of the U.S. state of Arizona.

Early years and political rise

Thomas Campbell went to the public schools and attended for one year the St. Mary's College in California. His political career began in 1894 with the position of deputy postmaster of Prescott. Later he was also from 1902 to 1905 the postmaster of Jerome. He was the president of the Rio Verde Cattle Company and the director of the Jerome Verde Copper Company. In addition, he was also active 1900-1901 in the territorial legislature of Arizona. He was from 1907 to 1911 County Assessor of Yavapai County, and again from 1912 to 1915 at this time., He ran in 1914 as a Republican for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Governor of Arizona

On 7 November 1916 he was elected governor of Arizona. He hit only with difficulty the former Governor George WP Hunt. On 22 December 1917, the Arizona Supreme Court ordered a recount and then told Hunt the winner. Campbell left office on December 25, 1917 and then worked for the United States Food Administration. He was then elected in 1918 one more time to the governor and confirmed in 1920. During his tenures his primary concerns were the equitable distribution of the water of the Colorado River and Arizona's tax structure. His administration approved a workers compensation law, confirmed a comprehensive Water Code and ordered a budget system for the government expenditure. Campbell failed in his attempt for a re-election, so he left office on January 1, 1923.

He remained active in public life and was from 1923 to 1924 Chairman of the Fact and Finding Commission on Federal Reclamation. He was also the 1924-1928 member of the Republican National Committee and 1930-1933 President of the Civil Service Commission. Campbell suffered on March 1, 1944 on the grounds of the state capitol, a brain hemorrhage and died at the age of 66 years. He was buried in Phoenix.

He was married to Eleanor Gayle, the couple had two children together.
