Thomas Elsbeth

Thomas Elsbeth (* 1555 in Neustadt bei Coburg, † 1624-1630 ) was a German composer, writer of motets and Protestant hymns.

Thomas Elsbeth worked in Frankfurt on the Oder, where his first works were published. He probably knew the Frankfurt cantor and composer Bartholomew Gesius. Later he also worked in Wroclaw, Legnica since 1606 and since 1616 in Jawor.

Thomas Elsbeth created about 150 motets and 100 songs to the Latin and German texts. His works show influences of Italian style and basso continuo.

His motets and songs he composed both in homophony as well as in polyphony. The songs are designed in the shape of the Protestant chorale, often 3 to 5 voices, the motet is intended for up to 6 or 8 votes.
