Thomas F. Tipton

Thomas Foster Tipton (* August 29 1833 in Harrisburg, Franklin County, Ohio; † February 7, 1904 in Bloomington, Illinois) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Tipton attended the public schools of his home. In 1843 he moved with his parents to McLean County in Illinois. After a subsequent law degree in 1854 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. During 1867 and 1868 he was a prosecutor in the eighth judicial district of Illinois. In 1870 he was elected there to the District Judge. Following a restructuring of the judicial districts in Illinois, he exercised his judicial office in the 14th District. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1876 Tipton was in the 13th electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the later Adlai Ewing Stevenson Vice President on March 4, 1877. Since he lost in 1878 against Stevenson, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1879.

Between 1891 and 1897 Thomas Tipton again served as the District Judge. He then practiced as a lawyer again. He died on February 7, 1904 in Bloomington, where he was also buried.
