Thomas G. Turner

Thomas Goodwin Turner ( born October 24, 1810 in Warren, Rhode Iceland, † January 3, 1875 ) was an American politician and 1859-1860 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years and career

In his youth he worked with his father on board a freighter on the route between Warren and Newport. After that he worked in a dry goods store, whose partner he became later. Then he went into the insurance business, in which he rose to president of an insurance company.

Political career

Thomas Turner was a member of the Republican Party. In 1857 he was chosen as the candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Iceland and 1859 as the new governor of his state. Turner was a supporter of Abraham Lincoln. Nevertheless, he failed in 1860 to re- nomination of his party for the office of governor. After his governorship, he was appointed by the Lincoln now elected president as head of the federal tax authority in the first district of Rhode Iceland. He was also curator of Brown University and a member of the Historical Society of Rhode Iceland.

Turner was one of the directors of the Warren Manufacturing Company, the First National Bank of Warren, Mechanics Machine Company and other companies, including another bank and a railroad company. He died in January 1875., With his wife Mary Pierce Luther, he had seven children.
