Thomas Gallagher (Illinois)

Thomas Gallagher ( born July 6, 1850 in Concord, New Hampshire, † February 24, 1930 in San Antonio, Texas ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party, who represented the state of Illinois for several years in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Life

Gallagher, who settled in 1866 in Chicago, learned after attending public schools in the occupation of Eisenformers and founded in 1878 own a business in Chicago. Later, he became director of the State Savings Bank in Cook County. His political career began in local politics and was initially 1893 to 1897 Member of the City Council of Chicago and subsequently Member 1897-1903 Member of the Board of Education ( Board of Education ). During this time he was in 1902 at the same time also chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic Party in Cook County, and then in 1906 and 1907, Chairman of the Committee of the Democrats in this county.

In the 1908 congressional elections, Gallagher was first elected for the Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives and represented there by five subsequent elections of March 4, 1909 to March 3, 1921 the eighth congressional district of Illinois. During this time he was in 1909, 1911 and 1913 Member of the Executive Committee of Democrats in Cook County. In 1920 he applied for a re- nomination, but lost his internal party competitors Stanley H. Kunz, who was subsequently elected to the 67th Congress.

Gallagher then withdrew from active political life and lived in Chicago. After he died during a visit to San Antonio, he was buried after his transfer to the St. Boniface Cemetery in Chicago.
