Thomas Gilbert (sea captain)

Thomas Gilbert was a captain of the Royal Navy of the eighteenth century. He led in 1788 with his cart included in the First Fleet ship and Charlotte with Captain John Marshall and his ship Scarborough one of the convict transports, which took place between Botany Bay (Australia) and Canton in China in the Pacific.

On June 17, 1788, he sighted the atolls Aranuka, Kuria, Abaiang and on June 20, 1788 Tarawa from the islands of the Gilbert Islands. They were given this name in honor of him around 1820 by Admiral Adam Johann von Krusenstern and Louis Isidore of Captain Duperrey, although the Gilbert Islands had not discovered yet explored. Today they form the island nation of Kiribati.
