Thomas Grandi

Thomas Grandi (* December 27, 1972 in Bolzano, Italy) is a former Canadian alpine skier. He specializes in the disciplines of giant slalom and slalom. During his career he won two World Cup races.

Biography

Thomas Grandi, whose parents were also born in Bolzano, won in the seasons 1992/93 and 1993/94 respectively, the total and giant slalom standings of the Nor- Am Cup. His first points in the World Cup he won in March 1993 in the giant slalom in Oppdal. The first World Cup podium place he reached on 22 November 1997 as the third in the giant slalom in Park City. In the following years, he scored again top- 10 finishes, but only after more than six years he succeeded on 25 January 2004 at the slalom in Kitzbuehel with the second rank behind the Finn Kalle Palander back on the podium.

In the season 2004/ 05 the Canadians succeeded the big surprise. Within 48 hours, he won both the giant slalom in Alta Badia and Flachau. At the end of the season he was able to place behind Benjamin Raich and Bode Miller in third place in the Giant Slalom World Cup. In the Alpine World Skiing Championships in 2005 he won the giant slalom and the newly established team event in fifth place, the slalom, he finished sixth.

Grandi is married to the cross-country skier Sara Renner and was in February 2007 for the first time father. A month later he gave his provisional withdrawal from ski racing known and then took over the management of the Ski Association of Alberta. In summer 2008, he announced his comeback, because he intended to participate in the taking place in Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. During the 2008/ 09 season, however, he was able to classify only twice in the points. In mid-March 2009, he finally announced his final resignation.
