Professional career

The tall Hearns began his professional career in 1977 in Detroit under the leadership of boxing Rainers Emanuel Steward.

Even during the construction phase, he suggested known opponents, such as the multiple world title challenger Clyde Gray and Bruce Curry, the brother of Donald Curry.

After 28 won fights in three years he won on August 2, 1980 against the Mexican Pipino Cuevas, the WBA welterweight championship by technical knockout in the second round. Much of the " puncher " Image Hearns is derived from this fight from, because of the strong impact Cuevas had never been on the ground and highly regarded.

After three successful title defenses he met in a unification bout on September 16, 1981 WBC champion Sugar Ray Leonard, to determine the undisputed champion of this weight class. He lost the fight on points leader, by technical knockout in the fourteenth round.

Then he rose up in the light middleweight and won on December 3, 1982 against Wilfred Benitez WBC title on points to this weight class. Both boxers had in the course of combat on the ground, besides, Hearns hurt in the eighth round his batting.

He defended the belt five times, including against Roberto Durán, which he inflicted on his first knockout loss. Hearns remained unbeaten in this weight class and is run as best of all time Halbmittelgewichtler the Ring Magazine before Mike McCallum.

During his time as a light middleweight world champion, he also punched repeatedly in the middleweight division, he resigned on 15 April 1985 against the middleweight champion Marvin Hagler, but was defeated in a spectacular fight by TKO in the third round.

Finally, in late 1986 he resigned the light middleweight title and won the following year at a distance of seven months, the WBC light heavyweight title against Dennis Andries and middleweight against Juan Roldan. The light heavyweight title he gave a short time later off again, the middleweight title he lost in his first title defense in June 1988 sensational to Iran Barkley, the KO was almost standing and with a " lucky punch " the fight in round 3 could still turn.

This prompted Hearns to switch to the super middleweight division. There he secured in November 1988 for the vacant world title of the newly founded WBO. Then it came on 12 June 1989, again at a unification fight with Sugar Ray Leonard, who at that time was owned by the WBC belt. The fight officially ended in a draw, so both each defended their title. However, almost all observers Hearns looked forward, the down beat Leonard in combat course twice.

But even at super middleweight Hearns held it not long: after a further defense of the title he laid down the WBO title, won on 3 June 1991, the WBA heavyweight championship, defeating previously unbeaten while Virgil Hill on points. But this belt he had to give his nemesis Barkley in his first title defense in March 1992 again. He was back on the ground and eventually lost on points

Until the year 2000, he completed ten more sporty meaningless fights in the cruiserweight division and then stepped back. However, in June 2005, he returned to make a comeback 46 -year-old back into the ring.

Early December 2011 it was announced that Hearns will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012.
