Thomas Hellriegel

Thomas Hellriegel ( born January 14, 1971 in Büchenau ) is a triathlete, multiple Ironman winner and the first German winner of the Ironman Hawaii World Champion and thus on the Triathlon Long Distance (1997). He is in the Hall of Fame German triathletes ( men) out on the Ironman distance.

Career

Thomas Hellriegel 1991 Military World Champion on the short distance triathlon. In 1995 he won at the age of 24 years than in the past recent athlete to Ironman Lanzarote and he was a triathlete of the year.

After two second places in 1995 and 1996 Thomas Hellriegel could win the 1997 Ironman Hawaii and that the world championship on the long distance. Its particular strength on the bike has earned him the nickname in Hawaii " Hell on wheels " ( hell on wheels). Thomas Hellriegel is one of Germany's most successful triathletes on long distance. In eleven starts in Hawaii he was six times best German rider.

He has a very high level of consistency shown by his performances over the last few years, although it may come up as the first German with his Hawaii victory (1997). It was not until seven years later, the next title should go to a German ( Normann Stadler, 2004). Further victories he could reach (2000) in his Ironman races in Lanzarote (1995, 2003), Canada ( 1996), Lake Placid (1999) and New Zealand. On many cycling routes, which he sailed as part of his race, he was able to set new distance records.

For his sporting successes Thomas Hellriegel was honored in Berlin in March 2003 with Anja Dittmer and Rainer Müller- horns with the Silver Laurel Leaf of the Federal Republic of Germany.
