Thomas Henry Manning

Thomas Henry Manning ( born December 22, 1911 in Dalling, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, † November 8, 1998 in Smith Falls, Ontario, Canada ) was a British- Canadian Arctic explorer who his explorations mainly alone by dogsled and canoe, undertook. He gained merits in the mapping hitherto unexplored areas in northern Canada.

Manning was born the son of a farmer in the UK Northamptonshire and studied zoology at the University of Cambridge. Even as a 20 -year-old, he traveled alone and on foot Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Norway, Finland and northern Russia. In 1933 he explored on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society, the Southampton Island in Hudson Bay. It was followed by other expeditions to the Canadian Arctic with zoological and geographical studies.

In 1938 he married the nurse Ella Wallace Jackson, called " Jackie ". Immediately after the wedding on Cape Dorset, Baffin Iceland, the couple went on a half -year expedition to map the Baffin Island. After another expedition, which took him a year by canoe and dog sled around the Foxe Basin, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, where he worked briefly as a descrambler. 1942 took him the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, for which he was planning military airfields in arctic regions. After the end of World War II Manning worked for the Geodetic Survey of Canada, charted previously unexplored areas of the James Bay and Hudson Bay, and was in the 1940s and 1950s, the leaders of several expeditions to the Arctic Canada. In the 1960s he was active in the Canadian Wildlife Service for the protection of polar bears.

Manning was Executive Director of the Arctic Institute of North America, as well as an honorary doctorate from McMaster University in Hamilton (Ontario ), and has received several awards for his scientific work.

"Jackie " Manning processed the adventure with her husband in two autobiographical books: Igloo for the Night ( Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., London, 1943) and A Summer on Hudson Bay ( Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., London, 1949).
