Thomas Herbst (painter)

Thomas Ludwig Herbst ( born July 27, 1848 in Hamburg, † January 19, 1915 ) was a German Impressionist painter and founding member of the Hamburg Artists Club.

Life and work

1865 autumn took lessons with Jacob Becker at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main. A year later, he began studying at the Academy of Arts in Berlin with Carl Steffeck. In 1868 he studied with his friend Max Liebermann at the Weimar Academy under Charles Verlat. From 1873 to 1876 he lived in Dusseldorf and took from there travel to Holland. 1876/1877 he lived in Paris with Max Liebermann and held in 1878 to study in Munich. There he came into contact with the Munich Secession and Wilhelm Leibl.

From 1884 lived fall again in Hamburg and had his studio in St. George; he worked as a drawing teacher at the " Industrial School for Women". In 1890, he undertook studies in painting with Carl Rodeck. In 1897 he was a founding member of the Hamburg artist clubs, from the account of the admission of pupils Arthur Siebel ISTS he resigned in 1903, their " cultural level ", he did not appreciate. In 1906 he undertook a study trip with Friedrich Ahlers - Hester man by Holstein.

Thomas Herbst died on January 19, 1915 in Hamburg. In the vernacular, and also in artistic circles he is called " Kuhherbst " because he often chose cows in motifs. His paintings are exhibited, among others, in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Altona Museum, in Gottorp Castle, the National Museum of Oldenburg and at the Kunsthalle Kiel.
