Thomas J. Robertson

Thomas James Robertson ( * August 3, 1823 in Winnsboro, Fairfield County, South Carolina, † October 13, 1897 in Columbia, South Carolina ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.

After the preliminary study on the school visit Thomas Robertson graduated in 1843 at South Carolina College in Columbia, today's University of South Carolina. Subsequently he worked as a planter. After the Civil War he took part in the 1865 Constitutional Convention of South Carolina.

As South Carolina, previously part of the Confederacy, 1868 was returned to its rights of representation in Congress, Robertson was elected together with the also the Republicans belonging to Frederick A. Sawyer in the Senate. 1871 was the confirmation in office, so he ultimately remained until March 3, 1877 in Congress. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on Manufactures. To re- reelection Robertson came due; he retired, also because of poor health, from public life and died in 1897 in Columbia.
