Thomas James (sea captain)

Thomas James (* 1593, † 1635) was an English navigator who made ​​his name in the search for the Northwest Passage and exploring the Hudson Bay.

1631 James interrupted with the ship Henrietta Maria in the Hudson Bay on. He explored the coast of the Bay, the southern part bears his name ( James Bay). After wintering at Charlton Iceland, he continued his expedition in the summer of 1632 continued into the Arctic Ocean.

James, who was close to death several times during his expedition, and ultimately failed, summed up his experiences in the book The Strange and Dangerous Voyage of Captaine Thomas James ( 1633) together. This work inspired the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge allegedly to the poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner ".
