Thomas Kretschmann

Thomas Kretschmann ( born September 8, 1962 in Dessau ) is a German actor and former swimmer.

Life

Having grown up in the GDR Thomas Kretschmann was a talented swimmer in his youth. He belonged to the National Executive of the GDR and won several championship titles. At the age of 19 years Kretschmann fled beyond the borders of Hungary, Yugoslavia and Austria from East Germany to West Germany.

In the late 1980s he studied acting training at the Drama School " The Circle " in Berlin. Then he played a role in Macbeth, directed by Katharina Thalbach. He made his film debut in 1989 in the film The confidant. In 1991 he was awarded prize for this film at the Film Festival Max Ophüls as best young actor.

In 1993, he then played in his first German movie. Joseph Vilsmaier cast him in the starring role in his war drama Stalingrad.

In the cinema Kretschmann is seen in supporting roles in major Hollywood productions. 2002, among others, in Blade II with Wesley Snipes and the Oscar-winning film The Pianist by Roman Polanski, in which he plays the German officer Wilm Hosenfeld.
