Thomas Lipton

Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton ( KCVO ) ( born May 10, 1850 in Glasgow, † 2 October 1931 in London ) was a British self-made man, merchant and yacht owners, who created the famous tea brand Lipton and the most persistent challenger in the history of the America 's Cup was.

1865 Lipton went to the United States where he took on a variety of jobs. He returned five years later returned to Britain and opened his first grocery store. This company turned out to be very successful and Lipton soon opened a chain of grocery stores. In order to supply its stores with goods, Lipton bought plantations, founded in 1898, the company Lipton and thus created among other things the tea brand Lipton, which exists to this day.

Also in 1898 he was knighted. In 1902 he was a baronet.

Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton was a great sports enthusiast, the different sports and business in his native England and later in Argentina itself, especially sailing. King Edward VII and King George V both shared an interest in yachting with Lipton and enjoyed his company. Between 1899 and 1930 he urged the American Cup holder of the America's Cup on behalf of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club ( Lipton was of Irish descent ) five times out with its yachts Shamrock Shamrock to V. These efforts, which created a special trophy for the " best of all losers" brought him, increased awareness of its tea brand in the U.S.. As a self-made man, however, Lipton was not a born member of the British upper class, therefore, the Royal Yacht Squadron took him until shortly before his death as a member.

In Argentina he founded in 1905 Copa Lipton for an annual country comparison of national football teams of Argentina and Uruguay. Even before the first World Cup in 1930 donated Thomas Lipton Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, which was played in two international tournaments in Turin in 1909 and 1911. The Cup was one of the first international club tournaments. The Lipton brand is now one of Unilever.
