Thomas Luckmann

Thomas Luckmann ( born October 14, 1927 in Aßling (now Jesenice, Slovenia) ) is an Austrian-American sociologist who taught mainly in Germany. He was a founding member of the PEN Club Liechtenstein.

Life

Luckmann studied in Vienna, Innsbruck and at the New School for Social Research, among others, Alfred Schutz. In 1965 he was offered a professorship at the University of Frankfurt am Main. From 1970 until his retirement in 1994, he was Professor of Sociology at the University of Konstanz, there were manuscripts of his work archived. Luckmann was married since 1950 with Benita Luckmann ( 1925-1987 ).

Luckmann's best-known works are The Social Construction of Reality (1966, with Peter L. Berger) and structures of the life world (1982, together with Alfred Schutz ). His research is concerned with social constructivism Luckmann, phenomenological sociology, sociology of knowledge, sociology of religion, sociology, communication and knowledge philosophy.

Importance

With his thesis of the privatization of religion and the "invisible religion" led Luckmann a fundamental change in the sociology of religion a. Religiosity was no longer exclusively on its institutionalized form ( " religiosity " ) moored, but also asked about individual religiosity. This change of perspective led after Luckmann also increased efforts to explore individual religiosity empirically using qualitative methods.
