Thomas M. Patterson

Thomas MacDonald Patterson (* November 4, 1839 in County Carlow, Ireland, † July 23, 1916 Denver ) was an American politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of Colorado in both chambers of the U.S. Congress.

When Thomas Patterson was still a boy, he left with his parents, Ireland and emigrated to the United States, where the family settled in 1849 in New York. Some years later, attracted by the Pattersons Crawfordsville in Indiana, where the young Thomas was employed in a printing company with a watchmaker and finally at a jeweler. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he joined the Union Army and fought for the 11th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. The following year, he returned home and completed his education at the Indiana Asbury University, and the Wabash College.

1867 Patterson was admitted to the bar, after which he began practicing in Crawfordsville. In 1872 he was a resident of Denver and opened an office there as well; 1873-1874 he was the trial attorney of the city. His political career also began in 1874 with the election to the Democratic National Committee, where he remained until 1880. From 1875 to 1876 he represented the Colorado Territory as a non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives of the United States. After recording Colorado into the Union first became James B. Belford first congressman of the new state; However, Patterson fought his election to succeed and took the mandate in the wake of December 13, 1877 to March 3, 1879 to true. For re-election, he did not present himself.

After Patterson worked again as a lawyer in Denver, before 1890, the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Times acquired another newspaper later. During this time he also ran twice unsuccessfully for the office of the Governor of Colorado. On March 4, 1901 he returned as the U.S. Senate back in the Congress; after a six -year term, he also declined this time on a possible re-election and focused in the episode until his death in 1916, returned to the newspaper business.
